It is estimated that more than 7.5 million tourists visit Scottsdale each year for its nationally-renowned resorts and spas alone. The City of Scottsdale is loosely divided into five areas: South Scottsdale, Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale/Civic Center/Fashion Square, Shea Corridor, North Scottsdale, and Nearby Areas. In 2005, both Scottsdale and neighboring Paradise Valley were among the top 10 markets in the country for luxury home sales, and the only 2 cities outside of California. Paradise Valley was ranked 9th with $637 million dollars in luxury home sales, and Scottsdale was ranked 10th with $594 million dollars in luxury home sales.
Not surprisingly, the city of Scottsdale is primarily characterized by a hospitality and tourism industry. Scottsdale’s economic base actually contains a much more diverse mix of business, professional and financial services, healthcare firms (such as the Mayo Clinic), retail, technology, electronics, and mid-sized corporate headquarters. The Scottsdale Industrial Airpark has become a model for the entire metro Phoenix area in the industrial and commercial development of a small local airport. It currently employs more than 50,000 people, houses 2,200 business and has a combined economic impact of $3 billion each year.
