 “The Beverly Hills of the Desert” or, as Scottsdale, AZ has been named by the New York Times, is internationally recognized as a premier and posh tourist destination. The New York Times has also described downtown Scottsdale as “a desert version of Miami’s South Beach” due to it’s late night social gatherings. It is estimated that more than 7.5 million tourists visit Scottsdale each year for its nationally-renowned resorts and spas alone. Home to more than 70 resorts and hotels (with four of them listed as AAA Five-Diamond hotels), its exquisite eateries, 5 star hotels and resorts, luxury golf courses, high-end boutiques, and famed nightlife contribute millions of dollars to the Greater Phoenix economy. Currently Arizona’s 5th largest city, Scottsdale is one of the best places to live in addition to being one of the top places to visit. Voted the Most Livable City by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1993, Scottsdale is consistently named among the top 30 cities in which to raise children, top 50 places to retire, and the number one resort community in the country. Scottsdale offers a wide range of cultural and community attractions, including over 125 art galleries, libraries, Old Town theaters and performing arts, museums, more than 200 world class golf courses, home to the FBR Open Golf Tournament, San Francisco Giants spring training, and upscale and high-end boutiques and shops, as well as a dynamic and diverse economy, incomparable weather, and a nationally renowned school system. 
The City of Scottsdale is loosely divided into five areas: South Scottsdale, Old Town/Downtown Scottsdale/Civic Center/Fashion Square, Shea Corridor, North Scottsdale, and Nearby Areas. In 2005, both Scottsdale and neighboring Paradise Valley were among the top 10 markets in the country for luxury home sales, and the only 2 cities outside of California. Paradise Valley was ranked 9th with $637 million dollars in luxury home sales, and Scottsdale was ranked 10th with $594 million dollars in luxury home sales.
Not surprisingly, the city of Scottsdale is primarily characterized by a hospitality and tourism industry. Scottsdale’s economic base actually contains a much more diverse mix of business, professional and financial services, healthcare firms (such as the Mayo Clinic), retail, technology, electronics, and mid-sized corporate headquarters. The Scottsdale Industrial Airpark has become a model for the entire metro Phoenix area in the industrial and commercial development of a small local airport. It currently employs more than 50,000 people, houses 2,200 business and has a combined economic impact of $3 billion each year.
